In the stack of Charlotte's elite players, there is only one 49er that brought on enough electricity to power the entire coliseum, and that player was Jarvis Lang. The perfect mix of power, speed and athleticism, Jarvis became Charlottes very own human highlight reel, rattling rims all over the nation with his authoritative dunks. If fans wanted entertainment, they got it via airmail as Lang stands on top of the dunk list by over well over 50.
Being the 3rd player of which could be considered the Charlotte Renaissance era, Lang continued bringing the Niners back to prominence. As a freshmen, he displayed his fearlessness against the nation's top teams, including a Christian Laettner lead Duke team in which he scored 30 points in a losing effort. That year he led all freshmen in both scoring and rebounds, a feat that has only been accomplished nationally by two others. However, things got a little rocky when Lang went down with a season ending injury during the second game of his sophomore season, forcing the Niner star to take a medical redshirt. When he returned, Lang struggled to duplicate his freshmen numbers, but was steady enough to earn his 2 team all-conference.
However, Lang would be back.
During his senior year, the Niners rode the dominant, high flying Lang throughout the season. Lang powered the Niners to a Metro Conference Championship and an NCAA appearance, earning him the Metro Conference player of the year, the final year before the Niners joined Conference USA.
Jarvis did not get drafted in the NBA, but played several seasons overseas. The Niners retired his #23 in 1996. Lang currently resides in Charlotte.
