Being one of the North Carolina's elite basketball players, Demarco became a quick “hometown hero” when he decided to play basketball in Charlotte over other schools. Bursting onto the scenes, Demarco was mismatch that teams couldn't prepare for. He was a finesse player that could switch to a physical beast in an instant. He could score from in the paint as well as the perimeter. But he wasn't all offense, he would make opposing teams best players look very average with his defense.
With a resumé that was rivaled only by Cedric Maxwell's, Demarco achieved similar accolades, but achieved them against tougher competition, as Charlotte joined a conference that featured powerhouses Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis and Marquette. Demarco was the centerpiece of a Niner team that expected to win no matter who they were playing. It seemed like he made it point to play his best games against the nation's elite basketball teams…which made opposing teams fear the Niners.
Demarco was drafted by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 1998 Draft. After a fairly brief stint in the NBA, Demarco played overseas until 2010 when he retired to start his coaching career. He is now an assistant coach for Hampton University.
Niner Elite isa series that celebrates legendary players who wore the green and white (and gold) and helped mold the brand to what it is today. There is no specific order. There is no set number. Just 49ers that have made an impact on and off the court.
